Plant Notes:Swamp Yellow Star Grass is a native perennial in the Stargrass family (Hypoxidaceae). It can be found throughout Alabama. Swamp Yellow Star Grass occurs on the floodplains of streams and rivers, in wooded swamps, and around ox-bow lakes. It usually grows in areas subject to frequent flooding, and often grows on the bases of cypress or gum trees, or cypress knees. It is an herbaceous perennial from a corm. The leaves are grass-like, linear, entire, and glabrous. The leaves are 3-12 mm wide and when not in flower the plants resemble a small sedge. Flowers are produced in racemes. Racemes are 1-7 flowered with usually only one flower open at any given time. The racemes are often lax and fall over. The flowers have 6 yellow tepals. The fruit is an elongated capsule with 10-50 lustrous black seed. The seed are muricate (covered with hard, short, points).--A. Diamond
