Tallapoosa Cane (Arundinaria alabamensis) was described and named in 2023 by Dr. Jimmy Triplett, professor and curator of the the Jacksonville State University Herbarium (JSU). At present it is recognized as Alabama's 31st endemic vascular plant taxon. It is also the state's fourth species of Arundinaria ranking Alabama #1 in native bamboo species.

The Birmingham Botanical Garden Herbarium (BBG) was transferred to the UWA Herbarium (UWAL) in May 2020.  This is an extremely important collection in that in contains the Blanche Dean specimens at its nucleus.  Blanche Evans Dean (1892-1974) is a lengedary figure in the study of Alabama natural history.  She was an early conservationist, wrote several books on plants and birds, and co-founded the Alabama Wildflower Society.  The collection will be databased, imaged, and made available here.
