Plant Notes:Bog White Violet is a native herbaceous perennial in the Violet family (Violaceae). It can be found primarily in the southern half of the state. Bog White Violet occurs in open, wet areas such as pitcher plant bogs, roadside ditches, wet pastures, along streams, and in low woods. It is a perennial from a slender, fleshy rhizome. Plants are colonial from thin stolons. Leaves form a rosette. The leaves are petiolate, erect, lanceolate to linear in outline, glabrous or slightly pubescent, and with crenate to nearly entire margins. Flowers are solitary on long peduncles. The flowers are white with 5 petals. The lowest 3 petals are often purple veined. The fruit is a capsule. Two varieties are sometimes recognized based on leaf width: Viola lanceolata Linnaeus var. lanceolata and Viola lanceolata L. var. vittata (Greene) Weath. & Griscom. Variety lanceolata has leaves < 8× as long as wide, while variety vittata has leaves > 10× as long as wide). Bog White Violet is a larval food plant for the Variegated Fritillary (Euptoieta claudia), and Great Spangled Fritillary (Speyeria cybele) butterflies.—A. Diamond.
