Plant Notes:Saltmarsh False Foxglove is a native herbaceous annual in the Broomrape family (Orobanchaceae). It is native to coastal areas of Alabama. Saltmarsh False Foxglove occurs in salt marshes, in swales between dunes, in tidal flats, and in roadside ditches. It is an annual with a taproot. Stems are erect, branched with ascending or spreading branches, green in color, glabrous, and roundish to 4-angled in cross section. The stems are somewhat fleshly. Leaves are opposite, sessile, linear or linear-elliptic in outline, and entire. The leaves have dome-shaped hairs on the upper surface and are somewhat fleshy in texture. Flowers are produced in terminal racemes. The flowers are 2 per node and widely spaced. The fleshy, obconic calyx has 5 deltate lobes that are shorter than the tube. The corolla is pink in color, 5-lobed, pubescent, with 2 yellow lines and red spots in the throat. The fruit is a capsule. Saltmarsh False Foxglove is hemiparasitic. Seedlings must establish a connection to the roots of a host plant for development to continue.—A. Diamond.
