Plant Notes:Georgia Skullcap is a native herbaceous perennial in the Mint family (Lamiaceae). It is native to the southern third of Alabama. Georgia Skullcap occurs in mesic to dry sandy longleaf pine woodlands. It is a perennial with a slightly woody base. Stems are erect, square in cross-section, green or reddish-brown in color, simple or branched above the middle, and minutely pubescent. Leaves are opposite, petiolate, linear-spatulate to oblong ovate in outline, entire or remotely few toothed, and glabrous. The leaves are punctate below. Flowers are produced in terminal racemes. Each lower is subtended by a leaf-like bract. The flower pedicels are pubescent and often have a few scattered glandular hairs. The calyx is minutely pubescent, at least on the angles and margins. The corolla is galeate, glabrous, blue in color, and two-lipped. The upper lip of the corolla is slightly longer than the lower lip, the broad middle lobe notched. The lower lip is notched and shallowly 3-lobed with a broad white stripe. The fruit is a nutlet. Georgia Skullcap is listed as an S1 species in Alabama (typically 5 or fewer occurrences, very few remaining individuals, making it especially vulnerable in the state), and globally as a G2 species (imperiled globally because of rarity (6 - 20 occurrences) or very vulnerable to extinction throughout its range because of other factors).—A.
