Description:common tree to 10 m, ith straight hin trunk (often < 15 cm); bark tightly roughened, dark; slash yellowish-cream, slowly oxidizing to strong red, with fresh odor; lvs coriaceous, pale beneath; fl cream, sweetly fragrant 
Habitat:woods near creek with Quercus nigra, Ile opaca, Magnolia virginiana, Itea, Cliftonia, Acer rubrum, etc
