Plant Notes:Tall Tickseed is a native herbaceous perennial in the Sunflower family (Asteraceae). It can be found throughout much of Alabama. Tall Tickseed grows along streams and rivers, in low pastures, and in wet roadside ditches. It is a perennial with long rhizomes. Stems are 3-6 feet in height, green in color, glabrous, often glaucous, and unbranched below the inflorescence. Leaves are cauline, opposite, sessile or short petiolate, and 3 foliate. The leaflets are lanceolate to elliptic in outline, entire, and glabrous. Flowers are produced in heads. The heads are arranged in a diffuse corymb. Each head has 8-9 yellow ray flowers and 40-80 reddish disc flowers. The fruit is an achene. Tall Tickseed is available from some native plant nurseries, or it can be grown from seed or divisions. It prefers a moist, clayey soil in full to partial sun. Very large plants may have to be staked to keep them upright.--A. Diamond
