Plant Notes:Swamp Tickseed is a native herbaceous perennial in the Sunflower family (Asteraceae). It is native to the southern half of Alabama. Swamp Tickseed occurs in bogs, in seeps, in wet pine flatwoods, and in wet roadside ditches. It is a perennial with a short rhizome. Leaves are primarily basal, those on the stem few and reduced in size. Leaves are petiolate, elliptic to spatulate in outline, entire (rarely with 1-2 basal lobes), thick and leathery in texture, and glabrous. Stem leaves are alternate, lanceolate to linear in outline, with the blade little differentiated from the petiole. Flower are produced in heads. The heads are on long peduncles. Each head has 9-15 yellow ray flowers that are lobed at the apex. There are 40-80 purple disc flowers. The fruit is an achene with lacerate wings and 2 short, barbed awns. Swamp Tickseed was once listed as an S2 species in Alabama (typically 6 to 20 occurrences, few remaining individuals, acres, or miles of stream, or factors demonstrably making it very vulnerable in the state), but has since been removed from the tracking list due to more populations being discovered. —A.
