Short's Clubmoss is a natural F1 hybrid formed by the crossing of L. alopecuroides & L. prostrata.  The hybrid could potentially be found where both parental species co-occur. The epithet honors American Botanist John W. Short (1952- ) a scholar of seedless vascular plants in Alabama.
