Plant Notes:The Gulf Coast Red Pitcher Plant is a native herbaceous perennial in the Pitcher Plant Family (Sarraceniaceae). It is endemic to the Southern Pine Plains and Hills ecoregion of Alabama and Florida, and is currently known from a single locality in Alabama (Covington County). The Gulf Coast Red Pitcher Plant grows in open, fire-maintained seepage slopes, along streams, and in bogs. It is a perennial from a rhizome. Two types of leaves may be produced: phyllodia (flattened leaf stalks that function as leaves) and traps (hollow tubular leaves). Phyllodia are uncommon in this species. They are reddish to green in color, erect, and lanceolate in outline. Trap leaves are erect, tubular, 15 to 80 cm tall, with an overarching hood. They are externally glabrous to weakly puberulent and range in color from green to red. There can have prominent red venation along the upper portion of the leaf and hood in bright light. The interior of the trap is pubescent with downward pointing hairs. The trap leaf is partially filled with rainwater and digestive enzymes. Insects attracted to the colorful leaves and sweet exudate drown in the fluid and are digested by the plant. Flowers are solitary on a long scape produced before any trap leaves open. The flowers are nodding and red in color. Each flower has 5 persistent triangular sepals and 5 petals. The petals droop between the lobes of the enlarged style disc. The fruit is a capsule. The Gulf Coast Red Pitcher Plant is listed as a S1 species in Alabama (Typically 5 or fewer occurrences, very few remaining individuals making it especially vulnerable in the state), and globally as a G3 species (imperiled globally because of rarity (6 - 20 occurrences) or very vulnerable to extinction throughout its range because of other factors). The Gulf Coast Red Pitcher Plant is available from nurseries specializing in carnivorous plants. It requires wet, nutrient-poor, acidic soil in full sun.—F. Parrish.
