Plant Notes:Old World Hairsedge is an introduced annual member of the Sedge family (Cyperaceae). It occurs in the southern half of the state. Old World Hairsedge grows in gardens, in flower beds, along paths and roads, in cultivated fields, and in cemeteries. It is often weedy in sandy, disturbed soils in full sun. Old World Hairsedge is pantropical in distribution, occurring in parts of Asia, Africa, North and South America, Australia, and on Pacific Islands. Its native range is unclear. Old World Hairsedge is a cespitose (growing in dense clumps or tuffs), scapose annual growing 2-10 inches in height. The leaves are filiform and 2/3 the length of the scapes. Flowers are produced in dense terminal head-like clusters that are reddish-brown in color. The fruit is a sharply three-angled achene with reticulate faces. There is a small flattened tubercle at the apex of the achene. Achenes are pale brown to white in color. Old World Hairsedge is a minor weed pest of cultivated crops (especially rice) and horticultural plantings. It can be controlled by mulching around desired vegetation.--A. Diamond
