Plant Notes:Sandhill Wild Buckwheat is a native herbaceous perennial in the Buckwheat family (Polygonaceae). It is native to the southern third of Alabama. Sandhill Wild Buckwheat occurs in sandhills, in scrub oak woods, in xeric sandy longleaf pine woods, and in xeric mixed pine-oak woods. It is a perennial with a tap root. Stems are erect, unbranched below the inflorescence, 1-3 feet in height, and pubescent with white or reddish-brown hairs. Leaves are cauline and basal. The basal leaves form a rosette and are petiolate, elliptic to spatulate in outline, entire, and densely pubescent below. The basal leaves are often withered at flowering time. The stem leaves are whorled, 3-4 at a node, sessile, elliptic to oblong in outline, entire, and densely pubescent below. Flowers are produced in 10-20 flowered turbinate to campanulate involucres arranged in terminal, open cymes. The calyx is petal-like and in two whorls of 3. The sepals are white or pinkish and pubescent on the back. Petals are lacking. The fruit is an achene.—A. Diamond
