Plant Notes:Dollar Leaf is a native herbaceous perennial in the Bean family (Fabaceae). It can be found in the southern half of Alabama. Dollar Leaf grows in pine forests, in mixed pine-hardwood forests, and in sand hills. It is a perennial with a tap root. One or more erect stems are produced from each root stock. The stems are 1-6 inches in height, green in color, pubescent, and angled. Leaves are alternate and unifoliate, the upper one rarely trifoliate. The leaflets are ovate to reniform or subcordate in outline, pubescent and glandular, with conspicuously sunken veins. Flowers are produced in short axillary and terminal racemes. The flowers are numerous and tightly clustered. Individual flowers are papilionaceous, pubescent, inconspicuously glandular, and yellow in color. The fruit is a short, broad legume with typically two seed. The legume is pubescent and inconspicuously glandular.—A. Diamond
