Plant Notes:	Eastern Prairie Anemone is a native herbaceous perennial in the Buttercup family (Ranunculaceae). It can be found throughout Alabama, but is most common in the Blackbelt region of central Alabama. Eastern Prairie Anemone occurs in prairies, in cedar glades, on roadsides, in lawns, and in cemeteries. It is a perennial from a vertical tuber. Leaves form a basal rosette. The leaves are petiolate, once ternately compound, and pubescent. The leaflets are ovate to obovate in outline, often lobed, with crenate margins. The leaves are dark green above and lighter green or reddish-purple below. Flowers are solitary on a pubescent scape. There are 3 involucral bracts located above the middle of the scape. The involucral bracts have linear lobes. Flowers have 7-25 sepals. The sepals are purple below and white, blue, or pink above. The fruit is a white woolly achene produced in a cylindrical head. Eastern Prairie Anemone is a common sight in the early spring throughout Alabama’s Blackbelt region and other areas with limey soil. It can even be found in the lower coastal plain counties in cemeteries, where lime from the grave markers provide suitable soil for this species. Eastern Prairie Anemone is similar to the Prairie Anemone (Anemone caroliniana Walter), which occurs in a few western counties. Eastern Prairie Anemone has all basal leaf blades shaped differently from the bracts on the flowering stems, while one or more basal leaf blades is dissected similarly to the involucral bracts in the Prairie Anemone.--A.
