Plant Notes:Yellow Bractspike is a native herbaceous perennial in the Acanthus family (Acanthaceae). It is native primarily to the Black Belt region of central Alabama with additional populations along major rivers. Yellow Bractspike occurs in bottomland hardwood forests along streams and rivers, primarily in areas with basic soils. It is a perennial with short creeping rhizome. Stems are erect, 1-2 feet in height, branched, green in color, pubescent, with a contracted ring above each node. Leaves are opposite, petiolate, ovate-lanceolate to elliptic in outline, glabrous below and slightly pubescent above. Flowers are produced in axillary and terminal spikes. Flowers are subtended by large oval bracts that are often purple-tinged and ciliate along their margins. Flowers are white, tubular, indistinctly 2-lipped with 4 equal lobes.
