Plant Notes:Philadelphia Fleabane is a native herbaceous annual in the Sunflower family (Asteraceae). It can be found throughout Alabama. Philadelphia Fleabane occurs in open woodlands, along creeks, in fields, on roadsides, in lawns, and in other open disturbed sites. It is an annual with a fibrous root system. Stems are erect, green in color, pubescent and minutely glandular. Leaves are basal and cauline. The basal leaves may be withered by flowering. Basal leaves are petiolate, oblanceolate to obovate in outline, pubescent, with toothed or lobed margins. The cauline leaves are sessile with auriculate-clasping bases, oblanceolate to lanceolate in outline, alternate, pubescent, with toothed or lobed margins. Flowers are produced in heads. The heads are arranged in corymbs. Each head has 150-400 white or pink ray flowers and 50-100 yellow disc flowers. The fruit is an achene. Philadelphia Fleabane can be distinguished from other fleabanes (Erigeron spp.) by its clasping leaves and the greater number of ray flowers.—A. Diamond
