Plant Notes:Purple Silkyscale is a native perennial in the Grass family (Poaceae). It is found in the southern third of Alabama. Purple Silkyscale grows in wet pine savannahs, in pitcher plant bogs, and in pine flatwoods. It is a perennial from a knotty rhizome. Culms (stems) are erect, 1-3 feet in height, and green or purplish in color. The leaves are linear and glabrous. Most of the leaves are towards the base of the plant and the upper blades are much reduced. Flowers are produced in spikelets arranged in erect panicles with ascending branches. The spikelets are ellipsoid to obovoid in outline. The lower glume is absent and the upper glume and lower lemmas are pubescent with spreading purple hairs. The fruit is a grain.—A. Diamond.
