Plant Notes:Nuttall's Lobelia is a native perennial in the Bellflower family (Campanulaceae). It is found in southern and northeastern Alabama. Nuttall's Lobelia occurs in wet pinelands, pitcher plant bogs, seeps, and wet roadside ditches. It is a perennial with a basal rosette. This rosette is usually absent at flowering time. Each rosette produces 1 or more flowering stems from 6-18 inches in height. The stems may be simple or branched above the middle. Basal leaves are petiolate and spatulate in outline. Cauline leaves are sessile, alternate, linear in outline, with entire or few-toothed margins. Flowers are produced in a terminal raceme. The calyx has 5 lobes with entire margins. The corolla is 2-lipped. The upper lip is 2-lobed, with the lobes curved backwards. The lower lip is 3-lobed, and the throat of the flower is marked with white. Flowers are pale blue to almost white in color. The fruit is a capsule with many small seed.--A. Diamond
